Costs and financial help

Study costs will vary depending on the type and length of your course and where you choose to study. Generally, course fees are unavoidable but you may be eligible for financial help.


If you study at university or an you will be offered either a:

  • where the Australian Government pays for part of your costs and you pay a student contribution


  • full-fee-paying place.

Whichever place you get, you may be eligible for financial help with study costs.

Fee help

Government support includes:

  • (known as HECS-HELP) for Commonwealth-supported students
  • (known as FEE-HELP).

Vocational education and training (VET)

Help with tuition fees could be available if you are studying:

  • at diploma level or above
  • through an approved training provider.

  • Certificate 3 Guarantee—supports individuals to complete their first post-school certificate III level qualification.
  • Higher Level Skills—supports individuals to gain certificate IV or above qualifications, as well as priority skill sets to secure employment or career advancement, or transition to university.
  • Free apprenticeships for under 21s—provides access to fully subsidised training across a variety of apprenticeship and traineeship qualifications, for individuals under 21.
  • Free tafe for Year 12 graduates—provides access to fully subsidised training in a wide variety of industry areas to assist Year 12 graduates into work.
  • Skilling Queenslanders for Work—funds training and support for unemployed and underemployed people through a suite of 7 programs.
